Website Design

Before you design your website, you need to ask yourself,

What's the purpose of a website?

Most people just jump right in on their website design and never stop to consider the reason for building a website. They are in a hurry to get started and don't stop to thing about the purpose of the design.

How can you design a website without knowing the purpose of the site?

You cannot design a website without having a purpose. The website purpose defines the design. The design sets the overall look and feeling of your site. Your website design dictates the construction of your site.

Your overall website site design must work to achieve your goal. You must design your site with an understanding of it's purpose. If your site design does not match your purpose, you will fight a hard struggle.

Each page of your site should have a specific purpose. For example, this page is designed to get you to subscribe to my Internet marketing newsletter. You came here because you want to learn about website design. I am teaching you about website design. Then I'll ask you to sign up for my newsletter. When I ask you to sign up for my website marketing newsletter, you will be anxious to sign up. Especially when I tell you it's free.

After doing website design for years, I realized I was going about it backwards. I never thought about the purpose of each site. I just jumped into the site design. Many of my clients were disappointed because the web site design did not match their thoughts.

Most of the time they felt the site design was not "flashy enough."

One of my clients started making changes to the overall site design soon after I finished the site. His pages quickly fell from the top pages on search engines. Within a few months his website couldn't be found on Google for any of the terms I had built the site around.

He thought he was improving the site design. Actually he ruined it. His website was designed specifically for search engines. Because he didn't understand about search engine optimization, his design changes destroyed my work.

Something was wrong. Not with the website design, it worked. If the design wasn't flawed they problem had to be something different.

The site design didn't match the clients definition of a website. I design and build web sites around simple codes. No animation, not sparkly flashy crap. Just straight information delivered in text. Simple website design around simple source code.

Since then I have gotten smarter. I learned to define the purpose before starting website design.

Again, ask yourself,

What's the purpose of my website?

A few easy quick answers come to mind:
  • My website is designed to sell my products
  • My site design aims to sell through affiliate programs
  • My website design seeks to build brand recognition
  • I want to learn about websites and html.
  • My website design focuses on building a subscriber list
  • Any many more answers.

After you understand the purpose of your website, start your website design. Any other way will only cause disappointment.
